This week the Elementary students have worked on dissecting flowers. They took apart lilies, discovering the calyx (group of sepals), corolla (group of petals), stamens, and pistil. Some have also opened up the ovary and discovered seeds inside! They took home a lily that has yet to bloom so they can show their parents the parts of a flower. What a fun activity for the students, and how appropriate to the time of year! A good activity to do at home is to dissect various flowers, such as tulips, roses, crocuses, and hibiscuses.
