The Elementary Class participated in two fun science activities last week, studying a land ecosystem and observing a water aquifer from start to finish. The students had learned about an ocean ecosystem prior to going outside and studying the ecosystem in our own backyard, the large field on the property. The students found crickets, wild mushrooms, bees, decaying wood, birds, spider webs, butterflies, various seeds and acorns, and more. They wrote about what they saw, separating them into abiotic and biotic groups. The next day, Mrs. Greenland showed the students how to build an aquifer, discussing the water table, the layers of soil, sand, rock, and charcoal, how pumice stone absorbs water, and how certain poisons affect the water table (such as fertilizers, pesticides, petroleum, etc.). What an incredible two days for the students!
