It was a delightful day as the children learned much about Hanukkah. We read the story “I love Hanukkah” by Marilyn Hirsh. The students learned about the history of the Jewish people and King Antiochus. As we read the story the children heard how one man, named Mattathias, helped lead his people to safety during this sad time of war. The children were very interested in learning about the miracle that took place with the oil and the lighting of the great menorah. Our students soon discovered that our classroom menorah needed polishing, so with the help from the Practical life area four of the children took on the task of cleaning our menorah. They also celebrated the day with the lighting of the menorah and playing the dreidel game. It was so much fun spinning the tops and sharing the gelt together. Our language lessons were extended into having a discussion about the Hebrew language and the Hebrew alphabet.
